In my last blog post I shared with all of you about one of the “charming” findings of a 200-year-old house – the lack of insulation in the walls. While that part may have been a surprise, the next charming characteristic is the not-so-surprising rolling terrain. Sure, the hills and pastures outside are drop-dead gorgeous. But those aren’t the hills I’m talking about. I’m talking about the literal hills and valleys that are the flooring of our home.
As the home inspector put it, this is completely normal for a house of this age. Luckily, the bones of the house are good so there’s nothing to worry about! It’s the natural settling of an old home. My dad, a retired history teacher, likes to remind me that Abraham Lincoln was our oldest daughter’s age when this house was built. He always knows the right things to say (insert eyeroll)…
There are three infamous hills in the house that are not so charming. The first one, with the highest elevation, is in the upstairs hallway outside of our bedroom. We are talking a very visible slope, that when you get brave enough to cross, will leave you questioning whether you’ve possibly had one too many glasses of wine.
The second hill is inside one of the twins’ bedrooms. You can’t see it with your naked eye, but you sure can notice when the bed is completely slanted! I’m wondering how long it will be before said child rolls right out of bed onto the floor.
The third hill/valley is smack dab in the middle of the kitchen and is home to the kitchen island. Did I mention that this kitchen island has wheels? Not a good combo! Imagine prepping your food on the island only to turn around and find out that your food has rolled away.
Even though this is all just so charming, these floors are one of the first things we will be tackling over our first few months living here. First thing though goes back to my previous blog post – you know, the one about the walls. The walls that still aren’t done. Pretty sure I see a future post about learning how to become patient. But then again, that’s not really my thing. In the meantime, you can find me exploring the hills. The ones outside and inside the house.
